My earliest books included Ivanhoe, The Tom Swift series and anything about the Antarctic explorers mixed with a goodly dose of Rudyard Kipling. My search for adventure was kindled by these early stories and led me to write a poem about their influence.

ADVENTURE
I've always been a lot of things
That no one ever knew.
I climbed a mountain, swam a river, and once I even flew.
Fact was just a whimsy that wasn't in the way,
So every time I started out, adventure ruled the day.
Today I was the pilot of an aging, trembling Spad.
Tomorrow: a batting, scoring Yankee or a 1920's cad.
I never know what lies ahead or what tools I may need.
But I live for that adventure that happens when I read.
